It won’t be hard to decide RAM is the way to go, the harder decision will be whether to get the 1500, 2500, or the 3500 model. All three of these trucks have significant truck capabilities, so which is best? That depends on what you want and need out of your truck. Let’s take a closer look at the RAM 1500 vs 2500 and the 3500.
When RAM redesigned their lineup in 2019, they created a seriously great truck. And the 2020 models just keep getting better. RAM’s goal was to build a truck with more power, a better engine, significant towing and payload capabilities. With the new 2020 RAM line up – they did just that. But they didn’t stop – they created a luxury truck that not only works when it needs to but also offers high-end features and a luxury ride and feel. Sure, it can tow a whole bunch of weight. It also has a smooth ride that makes you wonder if you’re riding in a luxury crossover. Let’s take a closer look at the RAM truck models.
Edmunds calls the 2020 RAM 1500 a best-in-class truck for a reason. Here are some of the standout features of the 1500:
• 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, a 5.7-liter HEMI V8, or a 3-liter EcoDiesel V6
• Hybrid system for fuel-efficiency standard on the V6 and an option on the V8
• A new diesel-powered turbocharged 3.0-liter V6
• More power and fuel-efficiency with ratings of 24-26 mpg combined
• Tow up to 10,650 pounds and haul 1,810 pounds
• Payload capacity of up to 2,300 lbs
While this is all about its power under the hood, wait until you climb inside. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Crew Cab a 5 out 5 safety rating. And while it’s safe, it’s also quite luxurious and comfortable.
Some interior features include:
• Heated and ventilated seats
• PanoRAMic sunroof
• Upgrades for premium leather and genuine wood accents
The new smooth-riding coil-spring suspension will make you forget you’re riding a big and tough pickup. It rides more like a luxury SUV than a pickup.
The cargo beds can come in both the 5’7″ and 6’4″ models.
The RAM 2500 is bigger and has more capabilities than the lighter 1500, but not quite as big as the super-sized 3500. Let’s take a closer look at some of its features.
• 410-hp 6.4-liter V-8, which makes 429 lb-ft of torque
• Excellent eight-speed automatic
• Two diesel versions available
• One diesel model offers 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft to 1000 lb-ft of torque
• Crew Cab model offers a max payload of 2380 pounds
• Maximum trailer-weight rating of 19,010 pounds
The 4×4 Crew Cab model is also available with an optional 50-gallon fuel tank option. Additional options also include lane-keeping assist and adaptive steering. While the RAM 2500 is larger than the 1500, it does not skimp on the quality of the interiors. The Longhorn, RAM’s 2500 top of the line model, even offers striped wood and gold trim on the dash, doors, and gauges. The center console is multi-level and can even hold a 15″ laptop. All the heavy-duty RAM trucks come with acoustic glass and active noise cancellation tied into the audio system.
The RAM 3500 lives by the philosophy that if big is good, then giant is even better. Its features include:
• 410-hp 6.4-liter V-8 and 429 lb-ft of torque
• Eight-speed automatic diesel model 400-hp HO version with 1000 lb-ft of torque
• Payload capacity of up to 7,390 pounds
• Towing capacity of up to 31,210 pounds
The RAM Heavy Duty Night Edition is available in both the Laramie and Big Horn trim levels. This comes with a monochromatic design in a variety of RAM colors. The version also features black 20-inch wheels, black badging, and a black interior.
Some features worth noting that are available on all trim levels include:
• Lane-keeping assist
• Adaptive steering
• Blind-spot monitoring also for trailer coverage
• Optional trailer tire-pressure-monitoring system
• 50-gallon fuel tank is now optional on Crew Cab models
Crew cab models also have an optional 8-foot-bed.
A new camera system supporting two exterior cameras is also new to the 3500 model. There is a limited-slip differential and load-leveling air suspension available on this model. However, if you plan to drive off-road, you should opt for the Off-Road package. This package features Bilstein shocks, a skid plate, and hill-descent control.
You start with the RAM 1500, which is one fantastic truck. Then you just keep adding size and power as you move to the 2500 and 3500 models. The truth is, for most hardcore truck lovers the RAM 1500 is one serious truck – with an abundance of features made just for the truck loving buyers. Then they kept going stretching the power and capability in the 2500 and 3500 models. One surprising thing worth noting, 2500 is actually an inch taller and wider than the 3500 model. If you are looking for serious towing and payload capacity any of these three trucks is bound to make you a happy truck owner. Having said that 2500 improves on these towing and payload numbers and the 3500 does even better.
